Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor and head of the Laboratory of Animal Genetics and Breeding at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki/Greece. He is president of the Hellenic Institute for Conservation and Utilization of Indigenous Ruminants (IDAAM) and focal person in Greece for the FAO Global Programme for the Management of Farm Animal Genetic Resources. He was member of the E.E.-DG XI Working Group on the "Endangered ruminant breeds in the EEC" and works still as evaluator of numerous research projects on national and E.E. level. He is contact person in Greece for the Mediterranean Network on Buffaloes (organized by FAO), member of the Scientific Council of the National Agricultural Research Foundation of Greece (NAGREF) and member of the EAAP Working Group for Animal Genetic Resources. His main interests are animal genetics and breeding, conservation of threatened breeds, selection and improvement of cattle, sheep and goats with special emphasis on selection and improvement schemes, application of DNA technology in animal genetics and application of information technology on animal production. He chaired SAVE Foundation for 1999-2001. He is active in a volunteer position as permanent representative of SAVE Foundation with the international organisations in Rome.
