Miklis Raheen Piltown E-mail:
<miggo@iol.ie> Born 1955. Farmer, Gardener. Since 1986 breeder of Kerry Cattle and member of the Kerry Cattle Society. Director of the Irish Seedsavers Association 1995 until Feb. 2001, now Guardian of the same. His area of special responsibility is the search for Irish Cereals Accessions, their repatriation and conservation. Through this project, based on his Kilkenny farm, 50 cereal varieties of Irish origin have been brought back into the country, propagated, and samples stored in the recently established Irish gene bank. Work is ongoing in locating and propagating more varieties, and collecting information about these varieties. Sufficient amounts of some varieties have now been achieved to allow the provision of samples for trials and farm use. Exploration of historical, cultural and possible future applications of the varieties is an important element of the project. Michael and the Irish Seed Savers Association are working on raising awareness of the importance of bio-diversity, nationally and internationally, and hope to further this through co-operation with SAVE Foundation.
