SAVE is the abbreviation for "Safeguard for Agricultural Varieties in Europe". The SAVE Foundation is the European umbrella organization for the safeguarding of agricultural variety. Its mission is the conservation and promotion of genetic and historically important cultural variety in agricultural flora and fauna. Particular emphasis is placed on ensuring the survival of threatened breeds of farm animals and species of cultivated plants. SAVE Foundation links the work of non-governmental organizations throughout Europe. The SAVE Foundation carries out its tasks with a minimum of administrative costs and, in line with Federal considerations, leaves intervention to on-site organizations. Where such organizations do not exist, they should be set up. The SAVE Foundation is a European foundation under Dutch law.
How does the SAVE Foundation work? - Safeguarding The SAVE Foundation safeguards endangered breeds and species as living stock in their area of origin. Animals or plants are only moved to another area when their preservation in a particular region cannot be assured. Wherever possible, the SAVE Foundation acts in collaboration with on-site organizations. If there are no local organizations, the Foundation initiates projects itself. - Co-ordinating Until now there were practically no international measures or projects aiming to keep traditional breeds and species alive. Thus, one of the objectives of the SAVE Foundation is the establishment of international coordination programmes - in collaboration with existing organizations. The results of these efforts will be published yearly in "SAVE Focus". - Researching The SAVE Foundation undertakes research work to find stocks of lost breeds and species. It carries out regular checks on remaining populations of farm animals and rare cultivated plant stocks and evaluates them. SAVE's "Monitoring Institute for Rare Breeds and Seeds in Europe" takes care of the scientific aspects of this work. - Linking As a European umbrella organization, the coordinating of regional and national activities is of great importance. The SAVE Foundation serves as a centre point for the exchange of information and know-how between non-governmental organizations, facilitating their contact with international bodies. The partner organizations offer their services free of charge.
Join us! The SAVE Foundation is open to anyone interested in the preservation of endangered breeds of farm animals and cultivated plant species in Europe. By working together, our common goal can be better achieved. SAVE provides the necessary infrastructure, informs, coordinates, promotes and gets involved.
